How to read this room
Evidence has its own ritual.
A citation is a small door left open in the wall of the sentence.
Each chapter of the finished volume will carry short notes at the point of use, then return the reader here for the full bibliographic trail. Historical claims, analytical claims, pharmacological claims, surviving objects, and house interpretations are kept visibly distinct.
Editorial method
Four kinds of authority
- Primary record: archival object, original paper, legal text, historical testimony, or museum record.
- Scholarly synthesis: a monograph, review, institutional history, or peer-reviewed interpretation.
- House observation: batch actual, sensory sheet, louche photograph, garden log, or laboratory measurement.
- Interpretation: a symbolic, literary, musical, or visual correspondence made by Nowhere's End.
Citation promise
What the book will not blur
- Historical use is not proof of modern efficacy.
- A molecule’s presence is not proof of a physiological effect at beverage dose.
- A cultural story is not a clinical finding.
- A commissioned plate is not an archival photograph.
- A house formula remains provisional until its actuals are measured.
Books II and V
History, culture, and law
Institutions and histories
Encyclopaedia Britannica: Absinthe · Science History Institute: The Devil in a Little Green Bottle · About Switzerland: Absinthe
Social history and prohibition
JSTOR Daily: The Trouble with Absinthe · Dodinet: absinthe and the First World War · WSET: phylloxera and the wine question
Dependence, regulation, revival
Padosch et al.: “Absinthism” · Lachenmeier et al.: dependence on thujone or alcohol · U.S. TTB Industry Circular 07-05 · European Medicines Agency thujone guidance
Fire, authenticity, and modern spectacle
Wormwood Society FAQ: flaming absinthe and authenticity · The classic French absinthe ritual · La Fée history and the modern Czech-style serve. These are cultural and industry histories, not laboratory or safety authorities; the book uses them to distinguish documented drip ritual from later fire dramaturgy.
Books III and IV
Botany, molecules, and the louche
Working botanical catalog
The herb library is the living index for plant identity, plant part, historical role, recipe role, principal molecules, and one linked botanical source per entry. The normalized bench bills are transcribed from the shared Nowhere Formulations workbook. It is a research scaffold, not a substitute for specimen verification.
Compound index
The molecule library records formula, class, sensory role, occurrence, biochemical notes, and references. The finished book will preserve exact chemical identity and label any inference as inference.
Book IV
Pharmacology and safety
Thujone and metabolism
α-Thujone and GABA-A receptor modulation · α- and β-thujone oxidation · Human urinary metabolites of α-thujone
Hyssop, fenchone, and botanical caution
Hyssop oil and convulsant properties · Hyssopus essential oil review · Fenchone toxicity and profiling
Interpretation versus evidence
The psychoactivity chapter keeps human evidence, animal or in-vitro evidence, historical testimony, expectation, and psychedelic interpretation in separate registers.
Books V and VI
Image, word, sound, garden
- Art canon: museum records for Manet, Degas, Van Gogh, Picasso, and related visual history.
- Literary canon: primary texts, bibliographic records, and attribution warnings.
- Listening architecture: cabaret collections and a clearly marked house composition brief.
- Absinthe Garden: local growing conditions, sourced botanicals, and cultivation limits.
Symbolic reading
Myth with a label attached
- Revelation 8:11: verse, Greek apsinthos, and interpretive context.
- Crowley: sourced text, attribution, and a house reading of spiritual autobiography.
- Falling star, Green Goddess, dragon, mountain, and four colors are visual correspondences—not pharmacological evidence.
Back matter production check
The final index will be a map, not a dump.
The printed volume will end with a combined index of people, plants, molecules, places, objects, methods, and source numbers. Each entry will point back to the chapter, plate, recipe, or experiment where it becomes meaningful.
